Chernobyl Helicopter Crash Footage

The real Chernobyl chopper crash happened on October 2, 1986, more than five months after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The Soviet press did not report on the accident and the government didn't make it known at the time. Not only did the real crash happen months later than it does in the HBO miniseries, it had nothing to do with radiation. The pilot of an Mi-8 helicopter accidentally struck a chain that was hanging from a crane. The entire crew of the Mi-8 died in the accident. This crash footage was not released until after the fall of the Soviet Union. Related Article: Chernobyl: History vs. Hollywood
