USS Indianapolis Survivor Interview - Edgar Harrell

After delivering atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in late July 1945, USMC Edgar Harrell and the crew of the USS Indianapolis were on the return trip from their top-secret mission when two Japanese torpedoes struck their ship, sinking it in just twelve minutes. Of the 1,196 crew members aboard, approximately 300 were swallowed with the ship and roughly 900 were left fighting for their lives in the water. In this USS Indianapolis survivor interview, Edgar Harrell describes the five nights and four days he spent in the shark-infested water waiting to be rescued.
