Major Dick Winters on Captain Herbert Sobel - Band of Brothers
In our latest video, Major Dick Winters
discusses Captain Herbert Sobel, who is
portrayed by David Schwimmer in
Band
of Brothers. As the first commanding
officer of Easy Company in WWII, Captain
Sobel is depicted as a petty tyrant. The
paratroopers, including Dick Winters
(Damian Lewis), develop a hatred for
Captain Sobel and fear he will get Easy
Company men killed if he leads them into
combat. In this Dick Winters interview, he
talks about Herbert Sobel’s
inability to lead men in the field,
including the true story behind Sobel
cutting the fence in HBO’s
Band
of Brothers that resulted in a
farmer’s cows getting out. We then
address the NCO mutiny that got the real
Herbert Sobel removed as commander of Easy
Company and we reveal the only other time
that Major Dick Winters encountered Sobel
during WWII, a version of which is
depicted in the HBO miniseries. Discover
why the Easy Company veterans would later
credit Captain Sobel with being the reason
they survived the war. The included clip
is from the Dick Winters interview that
Representative John Payne conducted in the
early 2000s.
