Whitney Houston Crack is Wack Interview Diane Sawyer (2002)

In December 2002, Whitney Houston was interviewed on ABC's Primetime by Diane Sawyer. After appearing gaunt on Michael Jackson's 30th anniversary TV special, the singer addresses concerns that she is dying. In response to allegations that she had been using crack, she tells Sawyer, "First of all, let's get one thing straight. Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack. Let's get that straight. Okay? We don't do crack. We don't do that. Crack is wack." The phrase "crack is wack" became popular after it appeared in 1986 as part of a New York City mural painted by American artist Keith Haring. Crack cocaine use had been rampant in major cities at the time and Haring created it as a warning. The Whitney Crack is Wack interview was the first time that the pop star ever publicly admitted to using drugs.
