In the first heavily publicized match played between a well-known male and female tennis player, the historic "Mother's Day Massacre" between Margaret Court and Bobby Riggs was played on Mother's Day, May 13, 1973. Riggs defeated Court handedly (6-2, 6-1), hence the match's nickname.
