The Big
Sick is based on the real-life
courtship between grad student Emily
Gordon (Zoe Kazan) and Pakistan-born
comedian/actor Kumail Nanjiani, who
portrays himself in the movie. Emily
became ill while they were in the midst of
dating, and she had to be placed in a
medically-induced coma. Kumail notified
her family and met them for the first time
under the unusual circumstances. As
evidenced by
The Big Sick
trailer, the fact that Kumail is Pakistani
and Emily is white only made things more
complicated and awkward.
